Our guest is J.C. Lotter, the creator of the A.x engines.

Q: Can you name a few titles that were created with the Acknex engine and have sold well (as far as you know, of course)?

A: This year's bestseller so far is the 3D Driving Academy ("3D Fahrschule") which sells in huge numbers in Germany. There are other games released to retail stores in the last 6 months, but from the most I don't know the sales figures.

Q: Do you plan to improve the templates? If so, what will you add / change to them?

A: We will make the templates customizable through WED panels, without any scripting. This will greatly ease games creation for beginners. We also will make the templates more modular, which allows adding your own scripts, and adding new template scripts, without having to modify or adapt existing code.

Q: What great new features do you plan to add to the engine in the near future?

A: Local variables, multiplayer improvements, some nice features for terrain, and many features that make WED, MED, and C-Script easier to use.

Q: How many polygons should be visible in a scene (frame) to keep a decent frame rate on a decent computer?

A: We recommend to keep a scene below 20,000 polys for allowing the game to run smooth on old machines without a GeForce card.

Q: Everybody is asking about A6. Have you started to work at this new engine?

A: Yes we have. But A5 has still a long life and A6 is far in the future. A6 will get a new kernel and major additions, thus the step from A5 to A6 is bigger than it was from A4 to A5. So there's still a lot of work to do
before A6 will take shape.

Q: I have loaded A4 wmp files in Wed5 (A5’s level editor) without having any problems. Do you plan to keep this compatibility in the future?

A: Yes. The file formats will change from time to time, when new features are added, but all old formats will be supported. Well programmed A4 games are supposed to run without any modification also with A6, A7...

Q: DirectX8 has brought new great features for game programmers. Will you implement DX8 in A5 or in A6?

A: Originally we intended to skip DX8 and implement DX9, but according to the latest news from Microsoft the DX9 release is postponed until the end of the year. So we'll go to implement DX8.1.

Q: What do you think about the AUM and what would you like to see changed to it?

A: Here I must admit that I have no idea what to be changed in AUM - I like it as it is!

Q: Do you plan to surprise us in the near future with new workshops, demos, etc?

A: If I would tell, it wouldn't be a surprise, would it?

Thank you.
