Important audio and video codecs and their license behavior:

Codec Type License restrictions
MP3 Audio A License is needed for commercial use of the mp3 codec, but no license is needed for private, non-commercial activities. You have to pay $2,500 per commercial title. You do not have to pay any fees if you sell 5000 copies or less. http://www.mp3licensing.com/royalty/games.html
OGG Vorbis Audio The OGG Vorbis specification is public domain, so you dont need to pay any fees, no matter if you sell your game or distribute it as freeware. http://www.vorbis.com/faq/#com
