J, j & BUM

 

This time I want to show you the storyline / level structure document for Jj & BUM; I was involved in its creation as well, but Pavle has played a bigger part.

1. MAIN CHARACTERS & ABILITIES

 

>Sister<

Big sister (Big J), a cute teenager girl (10-13 years old). The sister character will have the ability to change her gravity. She will obtain this ability by drinking a vial of magic potion given to her by the Wizard.

 

>Brother<

Small brother (Little J), a fragile looking young boy (6-9 years old). The brother character is so small that he manages to crawl into small spaces that can’t be reached by his sister. He can make himself almost invisible while hiding in those small areas.

 

>Good Wizard<

Mouse (the good wizard) is a very small, friendly-looking creature. His main role is to to prepare and deliver potions for all the special abilities that are needed in the game. He will be the main potion giver and spell caster throughout the entire game.

 

>BUM<

BUM (Big Unfriendly Monster) is the main villain in the game. The final task of the game will be to change him back to his original form: BUF (Bald Unfriendly Frog). He will manage to transform himself during the game (using chemicals) into BUUM (Big Unkind Unfriendly Monster).

 

 

 

2. GLOBAL GAME STORYLINE

 

The game starts with the two J brothers enjoying a sunny day & playing at the bottom of the Snowy Mountains. While big J was picking flowers for her flower crown, little J was playing nearby with his kite. The wind was very strong, so little J's kite got thrown far away from their house. He went after it, stepping deep into the mountain. Just when he has found it, little J has spotted something big & sinister appearing behind the snowy rocks. Startled, he has starts to scream, but it was too late: the Big Unfriendly Monster(BUM) has grabbed him, putting him in a sack.

 

But big J has heard the screams and now runs and chases BUM, trying to save her brother. She tries her best to catch up with BUM, but she is always a bit slower and finally gives up when she reaches a big abyss that she is not able to jump across. Sitting on the edge of abyss & crying, she is being approached by a little mouse that (to her surprise) starts to speak, revealing to her that he is actually an old Wizard that has been changed into a mouse by the BUM and promises to help her in her rescue mission. He offers her a strange vial of potion that can give her the ability to change her gravity.

 

She drinks it and then he goes away to prepare more potions, promising that he will be back whenever his help will be needed. The sister, being helped by the mouse, reaches BUM's dungeons & reunites with her brother. Then, Big J, little J and the mouse decide to find BUM and make sure that he won’t ever kidnap any other children. Unfortunately, when they finally reach BUM in his big, dark, ghostly mansion, he manages to escape from the rooftop using a primitive, funny looking helicopter and heads out for his main castle where he has his evil laboratory. Using chemicals from his laboratory, BUM turns himself into an even scarier creature - BUUM. Now he is twice as big & twice as strong.

 

Nevertheless J, J & the mouse continue towards his castle, determined to stop him once and for all. While fighting BUM, they manage to defeat him and he escapes through the sewer system to his strange looking swamp castle. After two more level zones they locate BUM in his swamp-palace and have a final fight where, to their surprise, he begins changing his appearance from BUM to BUF (Bald Unfriendly Frog). Once turned to BUF, he gets very scared and escapes with frog-leaps into the green, swampy water behind his frog-like throne.

 

 

 

3. FIRST (INTRODUCTORY) CUT-SCENE

 

The first introductory cut-scene should illustrate the first parts of the storyline, right up till the moment where Big J hears the scream and runs to save her brother by chasing the BUM.

 

 

 

4. GAME CHAPTERS AND LEVELS

 

a) CHAPTER 1 - Following the footsteps of BUM

 

In this chapter, the sister starts her quest to save her brother. In the first half of the level she is trying to catch up with BUM who's carrying her brother in a sack and exiting some areas that she just entered. When she reaches the big abyss in the second half of the level and has to give up, she is given a potion that allows her to change her gravity.

 

Level 1 / Snowy Mountains

 

This zone should consist mainly from snowy, windy mountain sides & tops together with some sort of small snowy caves and passages/bridges that need to be crossed. These levels should have environmental puzzles and problems that rely on jumping, pushing, pulling, or changing the gravity in order to pass big mountain abysses. There could be few animals/monsters in this level, but they should be more/less static and only react on close range encounters. The main strategy should be to avoid them instead of confronting or interacting with them.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

The first cut-scene should occur at the half of the chapter & show the mouse(wizard) joining the sister in her quest. Also, in this scene the mouse is giving the sister a vial of potion that allows her to change her own gravity.

The last cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the sister entering the Mountain Dungeons through a small passage in the snowy rocks.

 

b) CHAPTER 2 - Sister to the rescue

 

In this chapter, the sister (who entered the dungeons from their left, lower side) will have to reunite with her brother who is kept prisoner at the right, upper wing of the big dungeon zone. At the beginning of the level, the mouse will sneak into little J's cell, giving him a vial of potion that will help him escape . Once the brother is free, he will have to locate his sister, so that they can both find a way to exit the dungeons.

 

Level 2 / Mountain Dungeon

 

This zone should consist of badly lit corridors, prison cells, torture chambers, execution devices, strange steam machines, dirty sewer systems, big pipes, guard posts, heavy doors and some defense walls and systems. The levels should have technical-based puzzles and problems that rely on switches, mechanism activations and changing the gravity in order to trick the guards and jump across dungeon towers. There will be lots of guards in this level, and they should be very dangerous and react from very long distances. The main strategy should consist of avoiding, disabling, locking them out or tricking them instead of confronting or interacting directly with them.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

The first cut-scene should occur at the beginning of the chapter(or it can be joined with the end of the first chapter cut-scene) & show the mouse appearing in the Little J's cell giving him a vial of the special potion so he can use it to escape.

The second cut-scene should occur at the half of the chapter when big J and little J finally manage to reunite.

The last cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show brother & sister leaving the dungeon chambers & entering the mountain fortress.

 

c) CHAPTER 3 - Stealth to safety

 

The sister & brother will now have to go through the fortress above the dungeons, where they will have to pass through heavy guards, security systems and defense rooms in order to escape to safety. They must take care of not being seen, since any suspicious actions will trigger the intruder alarms.

 

Level 3 / Mountain Fortress

 

This zone should consist of naturally lit corridors, guard rooms, security & defense systems, heavy guard posts and lots of locked doors. These levels should have enemy-based puzzles and problems that rely on hiding, stealth movement, security mechanism disabling & overriding or changing the gravity in order to pass guards or jump across dungeon towers. There should be lots of guards, security alarms & systems in this level and they should be very dangerous and react on very long distances. The main strategy should consist of avoiding or disabling the security systems, locking out & tricking the guards.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter, showing the sister & brother finding the exit from the Mountain Fortress. After that, the scene should move to a view of BUM's mansion - we should see the J & J entering the scary mansion.

 

d) CHAPTER 4 - Big Unfriendly Mansion

 

In this chapter the sister & brother will have to get through BUM's mansion in order to find his room. Once they conquer each floor and locate his living quarters, BUM will run away and escape from the rooftop using a primitive, funny looking aircraft / helicopter.

 

Level 4 / BUM's Mansion

 

This zone should be a scary looking mansion with badly lit corridors, empty rooms with ghosts, hidden security systems, slow-patrolling guards and lots of locked doors. This level should have enemy-based puzzles and problems that rely on hiding, stealth movement, security mechanism disabling & overriding or changing the gravity in order to pass guards, escape ghosts or get the keys for locked doors. There should be small number of guards, ghosts, hidden security alarms & systems in this level and they should be very dangerous and react on very long distances. The main strategy should consist of avoiding or disabling the security systems, or, locking out & tricking the guards.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show BUM threatening that he will have his revenge on brother, sister & mouse and that he will be bigger & stronger then ever when they'll meet again. After that we are to see him escape from the rooftop using a primitive, funny looking aircraft / helicopter, and also see the three heroes sliding down from the mountain into the abyss with only a rope.

 

e) CHAPTER 5 - Forest maze

 

In this chapter the sister & brother will have to go through the big forest in order to find the waterfall & enter the underground cave system.

 

Level 5 / Forest

 

This zone should consist of large tree areas & areas with water pounds. There should be lots of plant-life, plant-like enemies, including the random crocodiles & a few other reptiles. These levels should have environmental puzzles and problems that rely on jumping, pushing, pulling, or changing the gravity in order to climb the trees or escape the enemies. There will be branches that can be used in order to swing from tree to tree.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut -scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the brothers entering the underground caves through a small waterfall at the bottom of a little lake.

 

f) CHAPTER 6 - Going underground

 

In this chapter the two J brothers will have to get through the complex system of underground caves in order to locate the exit that leads to BUM's lair.

 

Level 6 / Underground Caves

 

This zone should consist of badly, crystals-lit corridors, strange steam holes, dirty cave systems, big piles of dug up earth & stalactites. Since the players are walking in underground caves, there will be a limited supply of oxygen. Big cracks in the walls will suggest areas that has more oxygen & places where the J brothers can replenish their oxygen reserves. This level should have environmental puzzles and problems that rely on jumping, pushing, pulling, or changing the gravity in order to pass falling stalactites or strange steam holes.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the two brothers finding the way to the bottom of the high & spiky castle walls.

 

g) CHAPTER 7 - Inside BUM's lair

 

In this chapter sister, the brothers & the mouse will have to find & fight the BUUM.

 

Level 7 / BUM's Castle

 

Each level should include a bridge that is guarded by BUM’s soldiers and needs to be lowered in order to allow the J brothers to get deeper and deeper inside the castle. Each time they will have to persuade the guards to lower the bridge by attracting them, annoying them, etc, using a different trick for each level. This zone should have enemy-based puzzles and problems that rely on hiding, stealth movement, security mechanism disabling & overriding or changing the gravity in order to pass guards or jump across dungeon towers. There should be lots of guards, security alarms & systems in this level and they should be very dangerous and react on very long distances. The main strategy should consist of avoiding or disabling the security systems, or locking out & tricking the guards.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

The last cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the J brothers successfully finishing the final battle with BUUM. They have managed to defeat him and, to their surprise, he begins to have more of a frog-like appearance. He escapes by jumping strangely (like a real frog) into a sewer hole. The two brothers are confused, but decide to follow him into the sewer.

 

h) CHAPTER 8 - The sewer system

 

In this chapter the sister & brother will have to get through the complex sewer system of underground pipes & hallways in order to locate the entrance to the swamp.

 

Level 8 / Sewer

 

This zone should consist of big dirty sewer pipes filled with toxic liquids, badly lit sewer corridors, halls & hallways & acid drops that falls from the ceilings, forcing the players to time their movement. The underwater sewers zone brings waves of water or toxic waste from time to time, so the players have to use all their abilities in order to stay alive – the J brothers can’t stay underwater for too long (they will run out of oxygen) and if they touch the toxic waste layers they will die (the toxic waste eats their oxygen reserve much faster). Small hallways can be used by them to replenish their oxygen supply, but each hallway will contain a limited supply of oxygen (unlike the underground zone / caves). There should be lots of mutated enemies like monster-fishes & big poisonous worms that crawl on the walls. The main strategy should consist of avoiding them or tricking them to be destroyed by the acid drops or toxic waves.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut -scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the brothers successfully escaping the sewers and locating the exit into the swamp. Near the exit they will also discover the reason for the water / toxic waste series of waves - there are two giant cauldrons with faucets being turned on & off (in turns) by two of BUM’s frog-warriors and their content is going down the sewers.

 

i) CHAPTER 9 - Swamp territory

 

In this zone the two J brothers will have to get through the swamp / quick sand zones in order to reach BUM's swamp castle.

 

Level 9 / Swamp

 

The zone should consist of large swamp areas & areas with quick sand. There should be lots of plant-life, plant-like enemies, including the random crocodiles & few other reptiles. This level should have environmental puzzles and problems that rely on jumping, pushing, pulling, or changing the gravity in order to climb the trees or escape the quick sand & enemies. Also there will be big swamp-gas bubbles that appear from the holes in the ground that can be used by the J's to reach higher areas.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

A cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the J brothers discovering a strange looking swamp castle with lots of frog-like statues & frog-warrior guards.

 

j) CHAPTER 10 - Castle in the swamp

 

In this chapter the sister, brother & wizard will have to get through the BUM's swamp castle in order to find his chambers & defeat him once and for all.

 

Level 10 / BUM's Swamp Castle

 

This zone should be an organic, strangely looking swamp castle with badly lit organic corridors, small tree rooms, slow-patrolling frog-guards and lots of locked wooden doors. This level should have enemy-based puzzles and problems that rely on hiding, stealth movement, security mechanism disabling & overriding or changing the gravity in order to pass guards or get the keys for locked doors. There should be a small number of guards, hidden security alarms & systems in this level and they should be very dangerous and react on very long distances. The main strategy should consist of avoiding or disabling the security systems, or locking out & tricking the guards.

 

Cut-Scenes

 

The last cut-scene should occur at the end of the chapter & show the brothers successfully finishing the final battle with BUM. They have managed to defeat him and, to their surprise, he begins to change from BUM to BUF. As soon as the Big Unfriendly Monster changes into the Bald Unfriendly Frog, he gets very scared and escapes with frog-leaps into the green, swampy water behind his frog-like throne.
